Installing a motorcycle undertail will give your motorcycle a cleaner, sleeker racing look. An undertail will eliminate the stock black mudflap that holds the license plate, enclose the rear tail section, and eliminate the stock black inner fender while allowing you to keep your trunk space. Eliminating the stock mudflap will also eliminate drag and make your motorcycle a more aerodynamic machine.
Installing a rear tire fender or hugger will help protect your undertail from rock chips and dirt. Many huggers come in matching paint colors. Otherwise, you can install a neutral hugger in either black or faux carbon fiber.
There are several brands of undertails available in the US from both manufacturers and European importers, each with a different styling, list of accessories and price point. To compare, you can look at construction material and the items included with the purchase price. What does the undertail come with? License light? License plate mount? Turn signals? Turn signal brackets? Turn signal integrator?

The license plate and light are major considerations. Some undertails come with a license plate light installed that limits where you can mount the license plate. Many people elect to keep the undertail clean and install a license plate relocation kit that mounts the license plate to the rear axle or swingarm.

LED turn signals are built into many undertails for newer sport bike models. When you install an undertail with LED signals as a replacement for the stock ones, the turn signals will flash faster (usually 3x faster). You can install resistors to bring the flash rate back to 60 fpm (approx). For older models with side by side tail lights, a tail light integrator is a nice addition to your undertail to eliminate turn signals that stick out entirely. A tail light integrator will put your directionals into your brake lights.
Color is an important consideration. Chances are, if you bought your bike new, you know exactly what color your bike is. But what if you bought it used? Is the color Candy Grand Blue or Candy Thunder Blue? You can find out for sure at www.colorrite.com. You can also buy paint and have an unpainted undertail painted locally. Unpainted undertails can be easier to get for older models. And of course, you can get touch up paint if your undertail gets chipped.
Paint matching seems to have become much more difficult and expensive over the years as paint booth regulations have become more stringent making unpainted undertails more common. Certainly, you will want to get an unpainted undertail if your bike already has a custom paint job or if you are planning to paint in the near future.
Most manufacturers have changed their lines over from fiberglass (which will get spidercracks over time) to ABS plastic. Sportbike manufacturers use 1/8 ABS plastic for the OE bodywork. The undertail will match nicely if it is of the same construction as in the undertails from Hotbodies Racing.
An undertail exhaust is another option to highly customize your sport bike. An undertail exhaust adds an undertail combined with a high mount, under-seat exhaust. The undertail has a hole in it for the tail pipe to come through.
